Nirmal Gnanapragasam

Ph.D., P.Eng.
President, CH
2SC | Principal Scientist, CNL

Dr. Nirmal Gnanapragasam is a principal scientist at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). Leading research on hydrogen systems integration, nuclear-hydrogen production, large-scale hydrogen storage, hydrogen safety, and techno-economic-emissions assessments in the last 10 years. Leading the Canadian Hydrogen Safety Centre (a not-for-profit company) to help establish safe hydrogen handling. Has research experience in, heavy water production process design, catalyst testing, and plant economics; and tritium management process design and evaluation, at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited for 5 years. Did research on hydrogen production from gasification of coal, biomass and solid wastes; and performed energy systems and optimization, at Ontario Tech University for 2.5 years. His leadership, strategy, and organizational skills helped: AECL’s hydrogen isotopes projects; CNL’s hydrogen program; national level studies; CNL’s Science Advisory Board; the Canadian Coast Guard; various industry customers, associations, and hydrogen events in Canada. He is a licensed professional engineer in Ontario and has a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton.
